Under-Desk Cable Trays vs. Cord Hider Wall Channels: Which Wins?
These solve two different parts of the same problem, and most desks actually need both — but if you can only budget for one right now, here’s how to decide.
What a Cable Tray Does
An under-desk cable tray mounts to the underside of the desktop and holds your power strip and the bulk of your cord slack above the floor, out of sight and out of your foot space. It’s the right tool when the mess is concentrated under the desk — a power strip, a dock, a handful of cords all pooling in one area.
What a Cord Hider Wall Channel Does
A cord hider wall channel routes cable along a wall surface — typically vertical, from a wall-mounted shelf, monitor arm, or TV down to an outlet. It solves a different problem: a cord crossing open wall space where there’s no desk or furniture to hide behind.
The Actual Decision Point
Ask where the visible mess actually is:
- If it’s a tangle under the desk — power strip, laptop charger, dock cables all bunched together — a cable tray is the higher-impact fix.
- If it’s a cord crossing bare wall — say, from a floating shelf down to a baseboard outlet — a cord hider wall channel is what actually addresses it; a tray under a desk that isn’t there won’t help.
When You Need Both
A common setup — wall-mounted monitor arm, desk below it — actually has both problems: the run from the arm down the wall, and the tangle under the desk where everything terminates. In that case, budget for the tray first, since it has the bigger visual impact for the cost, and add the wall channel as a second pass once you’ve confirmed exactly how much cord slack you need to route.
One Thing Both Miss
Neither a tray nor a wall channel does anything for the actual outlet where all these cords terminate. That’s a separate fix — typically a deeper wall outlet cover with a built-in cavity — and it’s worth handling as its own small step regardless of which of the two above you choose first.
